How Scammers Use AI to deceive People
Artificial intelligence techniques have grown more economical and accessible, allowing criminals to build complex and convincing scams. Shaila Rana, a cybersecurity professor at Purdue Global, emphasizes that AI lowers the hurdles for attackers, allowing them to create frauds that seem real.
One of the most frequent tactics is phishing, in which scammers use forged emails or texts to get critical information. With AI, these communications appear more legitimate, making them more difficult to identify. Grammatical mistakes and misspellings were previously used to identify phishing, but AI has substantially enhanced the quality of these schemes.
To keep secure, watch for minute anomalies, such as misspelled domain names or minor modifications to firm logos. These minor features may suggest a scam.
Protecting Yourself from AI-Powered Voice Scams
Scammers may build convincing voice clones by recording a few seconds of your voice, which is typically available on social media. They may use these to mimic loved ones in difficulty and solicit money—a technique known as a “family emergency” or “grandparent scam.”
To overcome this, Rana proposes using a code word among family members. If someone calls and claims to be a loved one in distress, ask for the code word before taking any further action. Screen calls from unknown numbers to prevent falling into these traps.
Secure Your Social Media Accounts.
Scammers looking for personal information might find it in plenty on social media. To protect yourself, keep your accounts private, delete phone numbers, and limit how much personal information you disclose publicly. By limiting your digital trace, you make it more difficult for scammers to customize their schemes to you.
Watch Out for Fake Websites.
AI allows thieves to develop sophisticated phony websites that resemble actual ones. These sites frequently attempt to steal personal information or solicit fraudulent investments. Always make sure the website you’re accessing has “https://” in the URL bar, and double-check the domain spelling. If you’re dubious about a website’s validity, you may check it up on domain databases such as WhoIs. Be wary of sites that were just founded, since fraudsters frequently utilize newly registered domains.
Recognize AI-Generated Photos and Videos.
Generative AI technologies may also generate phony photos or videos in order to elicit money for fraudulent charities or promote counterfeit items. AI-generated material can be identified by strange hands, deformed teeth, or mismatched audio and graphics in videos. Use these signals to identify frauds and avoid dealing with strange information.
