Sam’s Club, a division of Walmart, is rolling out new technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to scan customers’ carts as they leave the store. This will drastically reduce wait times at the exits by the end of 2024. The information comes from a recent article by Breck Dumas on the Fox Business website.
Currently, when customers finish shopping at Sam’s Club, they have to line up and wait for an employee to manually check their receipt and cart before allowing them to exit. During busy times, these lines can get very long, causing frustration.
However, Sam’s Club has developed new AI-powered scanners that will be placed at the exits of all 600 of their stores across the United States by the end of next year. These smart cameras can automatically scan and verify that every item in a customer’s cart has been paid for, without needing an employee to check it.
So far, these AI exit scanners have been installed in 20% of Sam’s Club locations, which is around 120 stores. At these stores, over half of customers have already been using the new scanners instead of waiting in line. This has reduced overall wait times at the exits by 23%.
Sam’s Club says that its widespread adoption of this AI technology for customer checkout is the largest rollout of such technology in the entire retail industry. The company claims that other major retailers have struggled to implement similar systems at a wide scale.
By using the AI exit scanners, Sam’s Club hopes to provide a smoother and faster experience for customers leaving the store after shopping. It will also allow employees who previously had to verify receipts to spend more time assisting shoppers on the floor instead.
In summary, Sam’s Club is equipping all of its U.S. stores with advanced AI camera systems that can automatically scan customers’ carts for purchased items, getting rid of long checkout lines and improving the overall shopping experience.
