Nintendo’s View on Generative AI in Gaming: Pros and Cons

Nintendo recently discussed the usage of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in video game creation. Shuntaro Furukawa, the company’s president, addressed possible benefits and problems during a shareholder Q&A session.

Furukawa accepted that generative AI may be utilized creatively in games, but cautioned about potential intellectual property (IP) difficulties. He highlighted that, while AI has historically been employed in game production, such as controlling opposing characters, newer generative AI technologies present both potential and risks.

The game industry is currently divided on AI’s role. Some studios are enthused about AI-generated non-playable characters (NPCs) and AI-driven level design, while others are concerned about the potential impact on jobs, particularly in art, quality assurance, and performance. For example, Keywords Studios attempted to create a game purely with AI, but it failed because AI cannot replace human skill.

As Nintendo prepares to debut its next platform, Furukawa stressed the company’s willingness to embrace new technology. However, he emphasized that Nintendo’s goal is to deliver unique gaming experiences that technology cannot reproduce. He stated:

“In the gaming business, AI-like technologies have long been used—for example, to manage the motions of opponent characters—so I feel that game creation and AI technology have always had a strong link. Generative AI, which has lately gained popularity, has the potential to be utilized creatively, but we acknowledge that it may potentially generate intellectual property rights difficulties. We have decades of experience in providing the greatest gaming experiences for our users. While we are open to new technical breakthroughs, we will continue to give value that is unique to Nintendo and cannot be generated just through technology.”

While Nintendo takes a cautious approach, its competitors are more optimistic about AI. Microsoft is apparently creating an Xbox AI chatbot to handle support duties such as game refunds, console repairs, subscription management, and error code inquiries. Similarly, Asad Qizilbash, President of PlayStation Productions, stated that AI’s customisation skills are critical for Gen Z and Gen Alpha players who demand personalised experiences.

Electronic Arts (EA) envisions a promising future for AI in game creation. According to EA CEO Andrew Wilson, more than half of their development processes might benefit from generative AI. AI, for example, has reduced the time required to build stadiums for EA Sports FC from six months to six weeks.

Despite these developments, there are issues in the sector. Doug Cockle, the voice actor for The Witcher, voiced concern about AI’s expanding prominence, describing it as “inevitable” but also “dangerous.”

In conclusion, while Nintendo regards generative AI as a tool with creative potential, it is aware of the accompanying intellectual property difficulties and seeks to protect its distinct value in gaming. As the industry works to integrate AI, the balance between innovation and human ingenuity remains crucial.
