Elon Musk, recognized for his leadership roles at key firms such as Tesla, SpaceX, and X (previously Twitter), was recently chastised by his own artificial intelligence tool, Grok. The AI, which is supposed to provide real-time, smart replies, identified Musk as a major source of disinformation about X.
The incident began when user Gary Koepnick asked Grok who distributes the greatest disinformation about X. The AI responded unexpectedly, pointing to its own creator. “Based on various analyses, social media sentiment, and reports, Elon Musk has been identified as one of the most significant spreaders of misinformation on X since he acquired the platform,” Grok told me. It further stated that Musk’s postings have frequently been marked for spreading or advocating disinformation, particularly about political events, elections, COVID-19, and different conspiracy theories. Furthermore, Musk’s relationships with accounts that routinely post misleading information have fueled this belief.
Grok emphasized the importance of Musk’s large following and visibility. It was observed that any inaccurate information he publishes is swiftly magnified and gained trust among his audience, which might have real-world consequences, particularly during key events such as elections.
Interestingly, Grok admitted that the concept of disinformation is subjective and may differ depending on the reader’s ideological stance. Toward the conclusion of its response, the AI acknowledged that a variety of sources, including bots and humans, contribute to the spread of misinformation.
This announcement came shortly after Musk advised consumers to utilize Grok for “up-to-date” information in a tweet. Ironically, Grok faced charges of disseminating disinformation regarding state ballots in August, prompting changes to its algorithms.
This incident demonstrates the difficulty of managing AI systems that are supposed to be objective and data-driven, even if their discoveries are unpleasant for their designers. The topic was initially covered by Fortune’s Chris Morris, who shed light on how technology may occasionally disclose facts that are inconvenient for its most powerful champions.
