Unlike some US rivals, like as OpenAI, which use proprietary AI systems like ChatGPT, several Chinese companies are developing open-source LLMs. Open-source models allow developers to freely download, alter, and use them without being subjected to severe license constraints.

This method has helped Chinese AI models become immensely popular throughout the world. For example, Qwen, an AI model created by the Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba, has become the most downloaded model on Hugging Face, a popular platform for sharing AI models. Tiezhen Wang is an engineer at Hugging Face. Qwen’s achievement was emphasized, with a focus on its remarkable performance and flexible license conditions that allow firms to embrace it without facing onerous legal difficulties.

Another interesting participant is DeepSeek, a Chinese AI start-up. Their AI model, DeepSeek-R1, competes directly with OpenAI’s models for sophisticated reasoning tasks. These firms claim that their open-source model increases the accessibility of their AI systems, fostering worldwide innovation and recruiting developers to utilize their tools.

Why Open-Source Matters to China
China’s emphasis on open-source AI models serves two primary purposes:

Challenges from US Chip Restrictions
While China’s AI models are quickly evolving, the country confronts substantial obstacles due to US prohibitions on high-performance CPUs. These processors, principally developed by Nvidia, are essential for training huge AI models. The United States government has prohibited the shipment of Nvidia’s most sophisticated processors to China, citing national security concerns.

To circumvent this barrier, Chinese corporations have hoarded Nvidia chips and are investing extensively in creating homegrown alternatives. Xin Sun, a business specialist at King’s College London, highlighted that Chinese corporations consider LLMs as critical to their future business ecosystems.
